What the word means
The word Tajweed comes from an Arabic root meaning to make something excellent or to do it well. In the context of the Qur'an, it refers to reciting each letter correctly — from its proper point of articulation (makhraj) and with its due characteristics — so that the words of Allah are pronounced as they were revealed to the Prophet ﷺ.
Tajweed is simply giving each letter its right, so the Qur'an is read as it was revealed.
Why it matters

- Madd — the correct lengths of elongation, so vowels are neither cut short nor overstretched.
- Waqf — where to pause and stop, which protects the meaning of the verses.
It sounds like a lot written down, but a good teacher introduces these one at a time, through your own recitation, so you feel each rule rather than merely memorise it.
